Review: Leave it to this author to feed the need of the one area so often overlooked in the homeschooling family – physical education! Without a built-in gymnasium, especially in colder climates, it is easy to overlook the importance of good physical education. Outside of sports teams and park days, many homeschooled children rely on play alone to meet their physical education needs. Parents are often at a loss for how to add more activity to their children’s days – especially for children who really aren’t interested in team sports or parents who want to steer their children away from the competitive nature of many youth sports programs.
The book is broken down into sections by sport: basketball games, football games, soccer games, softball games, racquet and net games, recreational sports games, playground games, games with a homeschool twist, fitness-building games and finally rope-jumping activities. The first six chapters are prefaced with glossaries so that children and their parents can be well-versed in the terminology and usage of common words associated with those particular sports and games. The games are all for 1-4 players which is the perfect number for most homeschool families. Games can, of course, be modified to fit your family’s needs.
The book also offers information on the importance of good physical health. There are complete appendices with information on national standards in physical education, resources for parents, other recommended reading, and a long list of websites to peruse as well.
If you only vaguely remember fun playground games from your childhood, they are likely in this book with several variations to boot! I’m not sure how we will incorporate these games into our winter world but a basement will probably provide adequate space for many of the games in this book. The rest will have to wait until Spring!
Bottom Line: This is a great resource to have on hand for any bored elementary-aged child. Great for park days, co-ops, homeschool play dates or just between siblings (and parents!), this book will give you a never-ending supply of games and resources to keep you and your children moving and in shape!
