life, love & laundry
Teegan is learning web design for a half-year elective. And by learning I mean he is opening a book* and reading about how to do it and then doing it. I am there to help if he needs it but he doesn’t. He’s rockin’ the HTML and CSS. He sent me this web page he made the other day complete with stylesheet and image. Can I just say that this boy cracks me UP?! His rare meat asterisk killed me. If I were a teacher in a school I would totally bump up each kid’s grade who made me laugh :)
I realized while trying to get his project online that he is quickly surpassing my abilities in some areas. I learned web design prior to the CSS age and have never taken the time to really learn CSS properly. I can hack around in it but I’ve never written a stylesheet from scratch. Do you think it’s fair to give my kids As for any project that they can do that I cannot? I’m thinking of using that as my grading scale.
Speaking of which, last night marked a milestone for me. I had to call my 15 year old son for computer advice. I say call because he was WAY upstairs and I was WAY downstairs and heaven forbid I should get any exercise. Anyway I could not figure out how to get Addy’s dance video from the DVD to youtube. It wasn’t in any file format I had ever seen. I tried a few different things before a friend suggested I ask Dalton. He knows WAY more about video capturing and crazy technology than I do now. It’s a sad day for me. It makes me feel old and inept and just…old. I only wish his video captures were more creative than endless video game clips of random guys blowing up things (this is where I almost linked to his youtube account but figured I’d save that horror for another day). Curse you, Xbox! Anyway I was redeemed because, although he was kind and told me he’d come right down to help he actually STOOD ME UP! He never even showed up! The nerve! I eventually referenced my more beloved child named Google and Google was more quick with the answers and I worked it out. I’m not too old yet!
* I highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning HTML – it’s funny and fun to read. Really!
I love this boy! Tell him his Burger Maker 5000 is genius and I hope McDonalds buys it from him;) Crazy to think my kids will have “computer lab” in middle school and not be learning on DOS or whatever that was. It scares me that Jack is already better at navigating my iphone than I am.

Thank you. :)
If you haven’t already figured out… I can’t figure out how to make the “Order” button do anything. xD

I’m pretty sure that’s in the next chapter :)

Very cool Burger Maker! I can’t wait to see what happens when the Order button is up and running!
Nicki, don’t waste any time fretting over your exercise avoidance. We live in an 1800 sq. ft. ranch and we’ve taken to texting each other if we’re in different rooms. My girls even text each other when they’re in the same room. You know, because God forbid they should be required to speak :).

Do you unschool? or use a curriculum?

We unschool until middle school (more or less) and get progressively more structured closer to graduation, depending on the needs of the child.
