life, love & laundry
Every year we miss strawberry picking mostly because it has taken me three years worth of Marches to get into a berry picking frame of mind. In Michigan, Strawberry picking happens in June, or later for some varieties. Anyway we were happy to hook up with a friend to pick berries last week. I’m a strawberry freak – I can seriously count on one hand the number of times I’ve let my kids have non-organic strawberries. They are just one of those foods that totally absorbs pesticides and although I’m not generally TOO freaked out by pesticides, strawberries are one of those foods I just avoid like crazy. Thankfully we get lost of organic strawberries in Texas.
But not at the farm. I made an exception which may have been a huge mistake (see password protected post for those details). But the experience, itself, was super fun. Hard work! But fun company with a friend, our girls and our cameras.
Can I just say how much fun it is to hang out with friends who love to take pictures? It’s a whole different ballgame. Generally I am repeatedly made aware of how often I have my camera out and it makes me feel a little guilty or at least conspicuous. With my friends who are photographers, it’s a given. I don’t feel silly for wanting to take my camera into lunch JUST to look through the pictures we’d taken, for instance. I actually didn’t do this but would have had I known that my girlfriend was going to!! :)
Anyway we picked, we had some lunch and then we came home to washhave the boys wash a bunch of the strawberries so we could make homemade strawberry shortcake. You know, the real kind, that does not include anything that resembles a sponge?! It was sooo good. Too good. We polished off an 8″ double round cake between the 5 of us (4 of which were children). And we had plenty of berries left over to poison satisfy the kids for the next few days.
I think the next berries in season are blackberries and then our beloved blueberries. Blueberries are my favorite (to pick) so I can’t wait!
By the way, a word about the sunglasses….get used to them. A-M just goes nutso about the sun. She’s a total sunglass addict (and not for the fashion statement :P). If it isn’t cloudy, she will refuse to take them off. Very good for the eyes, not quite so good for the photographs :) It doesn’t help that she still sneezes like crazy if she’s in the sun. Now she even does it sometimes with sunglasses on but usually they help with that a ton.
Plus another thing? The wind. Get used to that too. I forgot how crazy the wind is this time of year in our area. But taking pictures this day reminded me of our bluebonnet pictures from last year. It was SO crazy windy that addy’s hair was all over the place. Plus the bugs were awful. We should have taken 2009 Bluebonnet pictures this week but it rained all week so hopefully it’ll be dry enough to get them done next week before they are gone! But I’m not looking forward to battling the wind and bugs.
You made the berry-picking sound like so much fun, I’ll have to be sure to take the kids this year. Love that last shot of Miss A. in her shades!
