Some moms are so smart! And a giveaway!

A few months ago I got wind that some adoptive parents and bloggers who I know were launching a new invention aimed at the potty-training crowd: SkinnyKidz belts.  The idea behind these unique belts is that they attach at the sides and NOT across the front which means that kids don’t have to undo the belt to use the potty. Brilliant! Sometimes you just hear about a concept and KNOW it is exactly what is missing from your parenting toolbox, know what I mean? That’s how I felt about this belt. I was seriously so incredibly excited about this concept that I told pretty much everyone I know all about it before I even got my hands on a belt.

So I was really excited when I was asked to test out a belt, share my thoughts on it.

First, about my “test subject”. Addy is tall and skinny. She has no waist at all which makes it difficult to find pants that fit. Even though we do buy a lot of adjustable waist pants, in order to keep them up we often have to adjust to great extremes which makes the waist really bulky and uncomfortable. There are a lot of cute bottoms that we don’t ever buy because they aren’t adjustable waist.  As a Mom of very skinny, lanky kids, this has been a problem for as long as I’ve been a Mom.  Along with adjustable waist pants, I’ve also tried belts in the past but have found that my kids really hate them. They are stiff and uncomfortable and a total pain in the butt to get on and off for what more often than not ends up being a very urgent potty situation for busy and distracted kids under 6 or so! So, like I said, when I heard about this concept that solved ALL of the above, my literal out-loud response was “Eureka!!” and then “Where have you been all my life?!?”

So the company sent me this cherry-print belt to try out and the print? SO CUTE! Check out this picture from the website:

Addy was really excited about trying out her belt. It was really easy to get on – just as easy as a normal belt – and once on, her belt has stayed on her pants ever since! It would literally take two seconds to take it off but I’m just that lazy (see? This belt WAS made for Moms – and kids – like me!). I wash her pants with the belt on and everything!

As a custom garment seamstress, I was particularly interested in the quality of the construction of the belt. I was really happy to see that this thing was built of steel! Well, not literally. But it was VERY well-constructed. The elastic seems to be really high-quality and has held up for quite awhile and through several washings. The seams are all secure and we haven’t lost – or even loosened – a button yet (the real test of endurance!). This is good stuff!

It didn’t take long for my 8 year old string-bean of a son to take notice and ask where his belt was. He has several pair of shorts this summer that literally just fall right off his hips. As fun as this is for my goofball boy, I’d prefer to avoid the “pants on the ground” look.  I begged, I pleaded and I was ecstatic to learn that SkinnyKidz has just added a new size for bigger kids to their line in cool fabrics for big kids. We ordered up the camo and khaki belts for Noah as soon as they were available.

But I haven’t mentioned the best part yet. This company is really incredible about charity giving. They seek out really amazing charities and each month one charity gets its own custom fabric belt and all proceeds from sales of that belt along with 10% of the company’s entire proceeds go to the charity for the month . May’s charity was Giving It Back to Kids, a NGO working to improve the lives of kids in Vietnam. June’s charity is Elephant Energy, an organization dedicated to bringing renewable energy to rural Namibia. How cool is that? You know that each dollar spent is also going to a great cause and, in some cases, all dollars spent!

So if I haven’t convinced you yet, the company is generously sponsoring a sitewide giveaway of a SkinnyKidz belt. The winner can choose the style (excluding charity belt) and size!

Brilliant! I wish these had been around when my 12 yo was younger! We had trouble finding anything that was long enough, yet narrow enough for her! My favorite is the cherries or the polka dots…now I need to show all of them to Lydia and see which she likes the best.

Great idea. My skinny minny might actually wear jeans now. She can not stand those itchy, rough adjustable waistbands. She is all about the polka dot!
