life, love & laundry
My daughter is working out her relationship with profanity. It’s pretty awesome.
Yesterday she rode her little bike into the kitchen and said to Tony: “You can say ‘What the f*ck, but I can’t. Those are grown-up words. Instead, I say ‘What The!!!’ ” and off she rode. The Rules, according to Addy.
Today while we were outside she walked over to a big ant and stepped stomped on it and said “Big bucking ant.” (for clarification purposes here I should remind you that she hates nothing in life more than ants – there is no empathy in her heart for the ant meeting its untimely peril) I made her repeat herself a few times for clarity and then asked her to define what she just said. You know, just to be sure. She said “that means I think that ant is really stupid”. Nice. And she can say her f’s. She chose b on purpose. She is nothing if not a line-walker. Always finding the closest side to the line possible and inching forward.
She does say some other expressions that aren’t so, um, precocious and make me laugh. When I do mean things like make them clean up or leave my work space so I can work, she will sometimes stomp off and say “Sad face” which is what her brothers say, stolen from this emoticon, of course :( Apparently when you aren’t sure if someone is actually LOOKING at you, announcing your sad face works too.
So I share this not because I’m proud of it but because if you can’t laugh at it, you are taking life WAY too seriously.

When my niece Jordan was 4, we were sitting at dinner, and something happened (I can’t remember what) and she said, “Oh, SH*T!” Before anyone could say anything she stood up from the table and said, “I’ll go get the soap” – walked upstairs, put a bar of soap in her mouth and came back to the table, whereupon she took the soap OUT of her mouth and said, “it was worth the soap to get to say it.”

Mia and Cams sing the wonderpets song and suck “tuck” like “pfuck” all the darn time.
we get, “I soo sad mommy, I miss daddy” and 2 seconds later “ohhh mommy I soo happy now”. The emotional swings of 3 year olds.

Pretty funny… and a pretty incredible photo. I can see why you miss your camera so much.

Brilliant. I *love* it! She’s clearly very creative and thinking hard about what she says. Good signs!

Haha -that’s good. Parker would be terrified, he LOVES ants – I had to buy him an ant farm already b/c he’s just fascinated with them.

Jonathan, I like ants too. It makes me sad that she is so afraid of them. I wonder if an ant farm might help her to see them as cool little living creatures and not something to be feared?

@Nicki, Might be a good Christmas present, and if she doesn’t like it, I’m sure one of the boys will!

Ah, once again I see a glimpse into my future. As luck would have it, I actually managed to avoid hearing any cursing parroted back to me for the longest time. Unfortunately that is not because I do such a great job of not using any myself. And, that changed this weekend. I’ve been hearing plenty of stuff now clear as day. So far, only when I’ve been dumb enough to say it myself – haven’t heard it initiated on her end yet. Gotta wash my mouth out with some soap. But that Addy, oh, my love of Addy, she cracks me up! Don’t know how you get through these kinds of adventures with her without cracking up yourself!
