Day 4: Now THIS is Vacation!

Today started much better than the last. The boys got up early and fished and then walked down to the pass between Sanibel and Captiva islands where they spotted manatee right off shore. Teegan actually found a mom and baby lounging in the sea grass having breakfast right next to a rock jetty. He could have reached out and touched them! Dalton came back to tell me because he knows how much I love them and we all drove down to see them. By the time we got there, they had swam away but one came up periodically. Dalton tried to swim with him (her?) but it was too elusive. It was a total thrill to see these gentle beasts in the wild.

Later we went down to the lighthouse end of the island. It’s the furthest point from our house so not a quick drive. It was a HOT day and we weren’t really prepared for the beach or fishing or hiking but we were searching for tide pools. We kept track of the tides and slowly figured out when and where the best places would be to look for pools. We were looking for cool shells but we were ALSO looking for cool living things. We ended up finding plenty of both but not on this day! After we nearly killed ourselves from heat stroke, we went back to the car and stopped for ice cream on the way back to the house.

We swam and lazed around the beach for the rest of the day. It was perfect! I checked the weather and found out that we had LOTS of rain ahead for the week – a total bummer. But turns out that because it’s a barrier island, a lot of the weather goes around the island. We watched this happen time and time again – very bizarre!

Mid-May is THE perfect time to hit up these islands. It’s after spring break but before school lets out. The place was DESERTED! And that is how we like our beaches! As far as the eye could see in both directions – NO ONE!

{I LOVE this picture of Dalton. Wish I had not cut off his feet. I might try to photoshop some on so I can make this into a portrait. He’s so hard to catch in a candid moment and this picture is 1000% Dalton!}

{we thought this was a baby swordfish but it’s not. It’s just some baby bait fish. still cute! We let him go}

{a cool shell we found. We hadn’t yet figured out the shell tricks so this was the first cool one we located. Maybe it’s  not even a shell. But it’s cool!}

I was hoping for a killer sunset but it was pretty cloudy which was actually a welcome relief! The sun poked through periodically but we stayed cool.
