life, love & laundry
There are two ways to do this. Both are really easy. One takes more steps than the other so I’ll start with the shorter version.
Version 1:
What you need:
A flickr account or a facebook account.
1. Go to http://bighugelabs.com/mosaic.php
2. Choose your rows and columns up to 36 photos. So you can create a 6×6 block. (Note: I do not use this method, in part, because I usually end up with more than 36 photos).
3. Choose where you want to pull pictures from – flickr or facebook. You can pull pictures from a flickr “set” if you keep your photos organized in sets (highly recommend, if you don’t already!) or based on tags if you add tags to yuor flickr photos. If you choose Facebook, you’ll need to follow the prompts to create the facebook link-up and then you can choose from the drop-down menu of your image folders.
4. Generate the mosaic. This takes a few seconds. Once done, you will see the embed code below the mosaic. Copy and paste this code into your blog and you should be all set.
You’ll see that this creates a very large mosaic which is another reason I don’t use this method. However it is definitely the fastest way.
Version 2:
What you need:
A flickr account with your photos in sets (see this tutorial)
The ability to create screen captures. There are a few ways to do this depending on your operating system but these instructions will utilize a browser plug-in for IE and Firefox called FireShot. It rocks. Install it if you ever plan on taking screen captures. Firefox version | IE version
Once you have this set up, the rest is super easy:
1) In Flickr, navigate to the set containing the pictures you want to create into a mosaic. Make sure “thumbnails” is your chosen view:
The squares on the right are what you will make the mosaic out of.
2. If you’ve installed FireShot you should see the toolbar at the very bottom of your browser. Click on the “pencil” icon:
3. Fireshot will create the screenshot and load it into the Fireshot editor. In the editor, drag your cursor around your thumbnails and then click “Crop” from the menu on the right side of your screen. You should now see only the mosaic! If you want, you can also click the “Text” button at the top of your screen to add text into the blank area, if you have an uneven number of thumbnails as I do in this example:
You can change the color, size, font type, etc on the right side menu. you can also remove the square around the text on this menu. You can reposition the text by clicking and dragging the text where you want it.
4. When you are finished, simply click on the “Save to Disc” icon to save your image.
5. Now you’ll need to either upload your mosaic to Flickr or through your blog directly to post the way you normally do. Voila!
It sounds like a lot of steps but really it only takes a minute to take the screenshot, crop it and then add the text.
