a weekend full of potential (21/30)

If I hadn’t gotten this stupid toothache, this would have been such a lovely weekend. Instead I spent half of it in bed, the rest of it in pain. No fair. I have no money to fix this tooth. I’m hoping my dentist will fill it temporarily for me or something. I just don’t know. I go in on Thursday to get my other tooth finished (finally) so I’ll know more then.

Still the weather was just lovely (if you like it in the near-100′s, like me) and we spent hours in the pool. Addy’s so funny about the pool. It is the only thing I can think of that actually makes her squeal in excitement when we mention it. She LOVES to go swimming. But she wears out much sooner than the rest of us, which is a problem. She usually gets out and wraps herself in a towel over hear head and around her body with just her little face peaking out and sits pouting on a chair. She looks like ET! Occasionally she tries to tell us she wants to go inside but there’s no one to take her. Haven’t quite figured out how to best solve that problem.

After our long swim, I made ice cream cone cupcakes with the kids. Remember those? Addy & Noah were so excited about them.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to finish. I took the same pain pills I have been taken for two days now but this time got SERIOUSLY dizzy and nauseous. I thought I was dying. I tried to sleep it off but was too shaky. It was really scary for me and I couldn’t even throw up so it was just torture. I had to wait out the six hours for the drug to wear off (meanwhile, though, my tooth didn’t hurt! ha). I just finally ate dinner but am feeling a little sick again. I just hope I  keep down the Motrin and antibiotic.

This really REALLY sucks.

3 Things:

1) I’m grateful I finally cleaned up Addy’s room. She had weeks of laundry to put away, a closet and dresser to reorganize, toys to pick up, etc. She helped me with all of it and was so excited to learn how to fold her own shirts. My goal is to have my kids basically handle their own laundry by age 6. I’m a total slave driver, I  know. But addy loves it. And it also appears she’s taken over Noah’s job of taking out the recycling too. She loves to help.

2) cupcake cones, of course.

3) Today I convinced Addy, for the first time ever, to jump into the shower with me. She didn’t entirely hate it. Not sure I’ll be able to convince her again tomorrow but I may try. It would make life sooo much easier if she could learn to enjoy showers. So this is a big deal. Until now she’s been VERY adamant that she would never get in the shower.

I’m SO sorry about your tooth. When it rains, it pours…

Careful what you wish for. :) Matty started taking showers with me well before he could even walk – maybe around 11 or 12 months – and I haven’t gotten to shower alone since. Now he demands I take the shower head down and let him “wash the walls.” Makes for nice, cold, drafty showers. Good times.

Is there a dental college around where you live? At the Univ Maryland Dental School (a little far away from Texas I know) they have a program where the last year dental students will do your work for a fraction of the price. Actually they end up doing a much better job then most regular dentist as their work is constantly checked by the instructors.

Dental work is weird in that for regular dentist no one ever checks up on their work, with dental students you know that what they are doing needs to be done and is being done correctly.

As I remember the dental school here has a few different type of clinics, some for emergencies and some regular care programs.

Will the dentist take a credit card? Maybe a possibility. I have also called around and found some that will do a payment plan. Sometimes if you call the expensive dentist and tell them your situation they will recommend someone willing to work with you.

    Nicki,
I did some checking and the University of Texas Dental School has a Houston location. there is a clinic there with fees about 1/3 of private dental fees. Here is the link.

I hope that your tooth feels better soon. You need a break from all of this stuff. I had never heard of cupcakes cones. You will need to tell me how you do them (I am guessing that you fill cones with cake batter and bake). Do you then top with ice cream? We never had or made these as kids.

Here is hoping for a better day.

I can not believe the dental issues you are having! I feel SO bad for you because I know I would be totally freaking out. I rather hate going to the dentist even just for a routine cleaning.

I am super impressed you teach your kids to do laundry. I can’t even get my 13 year old to fold her clothes. Seriously. She leaves the clean clothes in the basket (unfolded, unless I fold them) and just pulls stuff out when she needs it. And then inevitably at some point she can’t remember if the basket has clean stuff or dirty stuff in it and starts putting dirty clothes in so then I have to rewash clean clothes. I definitely should have trained her when she was young!

I was just going to mention the UTHSC-H dental school. I used to work for a dentist in San Antonio and we often referred people to the UTHSC-SA when they had need of inexpensive treatment. I know may people have had good experiences doing it that way.

We went to the pool at the Lake Club 3 times last week. Amelia asks about it every day. I for one HATE the hot and the fact it has been making the pool water so freakin warm!

Oh my word…I don’t even know if teeth are worth all the trouble and pain they’ve caused you. Seriously, that is awful. Dental work is OUTRAGEOUS, but I’m hoping you can find someone willing to consider taking you as a sliding scale patient?
I am SO impressed with Addy’s interest in helping you! My kids still think it’s hilarious to dump their plates over and “ice skate” through the food messes that makes on the floor. Fun times.
