life, love & laundry
Lots of BIG news this week!!!!!!!!!
105/365: Today I was playing with light. I want to see how dark I can underexpose my photo when shot in black and white. I’ve noticed that while I am more likely to slightly overexpose a color photo, underexposing black and white seems to work in my favor. Also a lot of this week’s photos will be at very high ISOs. Pushing the envelope….
106/365: My kittens are not newborns anymore. They are sassy with their mama and anxious to play. She just steadfastly bathes them and holds them down even if it means holding them with her teeth!
107/365: We had to hit up Orange Leaf again today. Yum. That place is addicting.
108/365: Today I launched my photography website. What? I haven’t mentioned this? Yeah, I know. I have been working on this for months and months (not the website but the concept of launching this official business) and I’ve come to it slowly, resisting it every step of the way. I’ve had to let it really mull. Which isn’t like me. I tend to jump in blindly and just give it my all. Until I crash and burn. This is very very different.I’ve had a LOT of encouragement from some really amazing people so I feel blessed to have such great support. But I’m still getting my sea legs. Also I’m reluctant to talk about it here because frankly I feel like “adoption blogger turns photographer” is so cliche. Right? I mean there are a LOT of us out there! I’m not big on cliches. But there it is, cliche: I launched my website. There it is, on the iPad (where it doesn’t actually work all that well thanks to iPad’s frustrating refusal to allow Flash content). While I’ll be doing sessions, my real love is childbirth photography. I have several births lined up and am VERY excited! And now you know why the black & white focus, heavy number of indoor pictures and the playing with exposures and new lenses! Surprise!
109/365: Speaking of births, I am shooting a birth at this birth center very soon so I went on a tour and it is beautiful. I want to move in and live here. And I love the midwife I met there and her philosophy on birth. The birth culture used to be a pretty prevalent part of my life when I lived in Michigan and I hadn’t realized how much I missed it until recently. Being part of the birth culture as a photographer makes so much sense to me. It won’t make me rich, for sure, but it will be fulfilling in other ways. And speaking of personal fulfillment, I have some adoption related photography news to share within the next few weeks too. I’m so excited about it. I mean REALLY excited!!! So stay tuned for that update!
110/365: Beautiful weather these days. Unfortunately the mosquitoes are back. I’m sad. This year we aren’t going to let them stop us. If we hire someone to spray our yard with toxic chemicals, will that really work? For how long? Because I will do it without a second thought. I miss my yard all summer.
111/365: Today my first baby got his learner’s permit. I threatened to make him wear a helmet for this picture but in an act of what I can only call utter defiance, he refused. The nerve!!! What was more upsetting than the permit was the fact that when they measured him for his permit ID, the number they came up with was 6 feet even. How is my first baby six feet tall?!?! So he did go out for his first “spin” today. That involved backing down the driveway after instructions were given about which was the gas and which was the brake :) and a very slow non-accelerated spin around the cul-de-sac (that would be the circular island you see in the background of the picture :P). So funny.
